WHAT ARE LEGACY USERS MISSING IN PHOTOSHOP CREATIVE CLOUD?
I think most people such as myself are still using a legacy version of Photoshop or Adobe Creative Suit and are hesitant to make the leap into Creative Cloud. Why is that you ask? Maybe we are set in our old ways, maybe we like having a physical copy and don’t want to be connected to the cloud but whatever the reason is there is most likely useful tools we are missing in the current version. Let’s dive into the differences between Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CC which who knows might just make us join the band wagon.
WHAT LEGACY USERS ARE MISSING?
CREATIVE CLOUD LIBRARIES
One key new feature of Adobe Photoshop CC is the use of Creative Cloud Libraries which includes plenty of linked Assets and storage for all your art files in the mysterious cloud. The creative cloud libraries has a plethora of useful assets such as character styles, adobe stock imagery, created colors and the ability to share assets.
Adobe has implements Artboards which has make the design process painless and give you an endless canvas to layout your design from different platforms or screens. There are a wide variety of preset sizes or you can choose a size and artboards can be useful for design of one page. If you designing a website or brochure you can see multiple pages side by side and compare.
MULTIPLE INSTANCES OF LAYER STYLES
Now layer styles are even easier with Multiple instances of layer styles which means no more multiple layers to accomplish a desirable effect and all effects can be attached to a single layer.
DEVICE PREVIEW AND ADOBE PREVIEW CC APP
A useful tool that hasn’t been seen on any of the previous version of photoshop is Device Preview and Adobe Preview CC companion app. Anyone who has ever design a website knows that the design can give undesirable effects across different platforms and this can take away from the designers message or overall user experience. The Adobe Preview CC app allows the designer to see what their design looks like on different platforms such as mobile and the creator can tweak their design to better suit the platform.
The Glyphs panel makes it easy to inset punctuation, superscripts & subscript, currency symbols, numbers, specialized characters and even glyphs from other languages.
REAL-TIME HEALING BRUSH
Photoshop’s healing brush has been around for quite some time now but now Adobe has introduced the Real-Time Healing brush into Adobe Photoshop CC which offers well what the name suggest a real-time preview of what the tool was doing and will smudge more then the legacy versions.
Normal scaling can affect all pixels in a uniform way but with a feature called Content-Aware Scaling can change the size, move or rotate pixels in areas that don’t have important visual subjects.
A feature that most people won’t use very often or even find useful will be the Content Aware Fill Transparent Area function when stitching panoramas. If you have ever tried to stitch panoramas you have come into the problem of the empty space around the image which is due to the perspective and distortion adjustments that come from the stitching algorithms. The Content Aware Fill automatically does the retouching which can save a lot of time over cropping the space out or using the clone stamp to fill in the space and this will make the process painless!
GUIDE SET CREATION AND PRESETS
Adobe has made it easier to add multiple guides in Photoshop CC which can be access and customized in the view menu. Within this new feature you can enter the number of Columns, rows, width, height, gutter, margins and if you want the columns to be centered.
LINK SMART OBJECTS
If you aren’t familiar with smart objects they are layers that contain raster or vector images and preserve an images source content with all the original characteristics. In Photoshop CC the user can create Smart objects that are linked and these linked objects become updated when there are changes made to the source file.
BLUR GALLERY MOTION EFFECTS AND ADDITIVE NOISE
Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud has the new Blur Gallery which has several different featured blur effects and you can access them in the filter menu. The field blur builds a gradient or blur, iris blur to simulate a shallow depth-of-field and you can define multiple focus points,tilt-shift simulates an image with a tilt shift lens which heightens sharp areas and fades to a blur at the edges. There is also path blur which obviously blurs on a path and spin blur can rotate blur around one or multiple points such as making a wheel appear to be in motion.
Photoshop CC will analysis an image and determine what is in focus and what is out of focus with focus mask. Photoshop with then make selections based on depth of field and create of mask of the out of focus areas.
SMARTER SMART GUIDES
The guides have just got smarter then ever before in Photoshop CC with pixel perfect alignment, showing the distances to the edge of the canvas when you hold Cmd on the Mac or CTRL on Windows and the distance to other objects by while hovering over the object with same key held in.
DESKTOP FONTS FROM ADOBE TYPEKIT
Adobe includes a typefit portfolio plan with your creative subscriptions which wasn’t included with the purchase of photoshop before which essential is a library of different font types that can be used within the creative cloud on all creative programs offered by adobe. There is also an option to search fonts and an instant font preview feature.
3D PRINTING SUPPORT
For those who are into 3d printing which I myself would like to purchase a 3d printer but haven’t yet there is now 3d printing support built into Adobe Creative Cloud and now you can print a 3d object straight from photoshop, cool!
IMPROVED WINDOWS TOUCH, STYLUS SUPPORT & HiDPI SUPPORT
Adobe Photoshop CC and illustrator received a number of improvements for touchscreen devices such as the surface pro 3 running windows. The app now allows for more touchscreen gestures such as pinch, zoom, pan and rotate.
It has become very easy to change the perspective of an image with the Perspective Warp feature. This can be very useful when working with architecture, flat or straight lines in an image and if you are creating composites.
This is an exciting new technology only offered in the Creative Cloud which allows the creator to extract assets from an image in a photoshop document and can be a very useful tool for web designers.
ALL-NEW SMART SHARPEN
Smart Sharpen produces less color halos than the more know Unsharp Mask by detecting edges, it filters sharpens edges without sharpening noise and has a reduce noise option. Unsharp Mask fixes the Guassian blur while the new Smart Sharpen can correct Gaussian blur, lens blur and motion blur.
CAMERA SHAKE REDUCTION
Well as the name suggests this feature reduces some of the blur caused by shaky hands while taking photos and I have had great success clearing up most if not all blur while using the Camera Shake Reduction feature.
ADOBE CAMERA RAW 9
The Camera Raw feature can enhance saturation, clarity, contrast and plenty more in your photos without destroying the original source file. Camera Raw 9 adds support for new cameras, lenses, fix several issues and supports pressure sensitive devices.
PHOTOSHOP CC PRICING
If we remember up till now Adobe Photoshop or Creative Suite has a one time license fee which was extremely expensive and most of us couldn’t afford it or had to save for quite some time before we could get our hands on it but now adobe has changed that with Adobe Creative Cloud. Adobe Creative Cloud has several monthly subscriptions stating at $9.99 up to $79.98 and you can find out more at the Creative Cloud website.
SO WHY ARE THERE STILL PHOTOSHOP CS6 USERS?
As we can see there are many new features in Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud that CS6 users are missing but why do you think there are still many users such as myself using the legacy version. Is it licensing? the fact that many people like the idea of owning a physical copy? Maybe some creatives are scared of the mysterious cloud or maybe the legacy version is all some of us need and just don’t really require the new features. Whatever the reason maybe it isn’t hard to see that there are many useful new features in the Creative Cloud and they all can make the design process a little less painful while keeping all the fun within the creation of ART. I know I as well as other designers will make the transition soon and for good reasoning!
