MY LOVE FOR GRAPHIC DESIGN, THE PASSION WITHIN!

I am a freelance graphic designer and I have a growing love for it but why you ask? Graphic design is a huge part of my soul and who I am. All aspects of designing excites me, creating, thinking, solving complex problems and designing a better visual world! Once I discovered my passion for graphic design I never wondered how to express myself creatively, the design process has always brought me peace and serenity. Let’s break my love down…

CREATING

Creativity

All my life I have had a passions for creating and most of my time has been consumed by it. This passion for creating has stem passed just designing logos and graphic design. All forms of creating has drove my passion, drawing, graphic design, web design, carpentry, arts and crafts, etc. When I am creating it becomes me, I get lost in it, time doesn’t exist, I don’t realize I’m hungry, I forget I have to use the bathroom and the space around me doesn’t exist. There is no better feeling then creating something eye pleasing and seeing that creations coming to life from just a sketch to a functional entity of it’s own. One creation encourages another, all single designs become a petal on a beautiful flower and serve one purpose to please all around and serve a purpose.

THINKING

Brain thinking

Believe it or not even the thinking process that starts when your are approached by a client or after reading the brief is enjoyable experience in itself. It is the initial start of your adventure and where all the magic starts to take place. I always get excited when I start to think about where the design process will take me and how I might solve the issues that face me when designing a logo or any graphic material.

PROBLEM SOLVING

problem solving mind map

Every project begins because there is a problem that needs to be solved and it is the one part of graphic design work that is fun as well as frustrating for me. When approached by a client for lets say a logo design there is a list of initial problems that needs to be solved, a business is being started, there is a need for a visual representation, the visual needs to showcase the business’ core attributes, it has to portray the quality of service offered, give the impression of trust, must be unique and memorable. Whatever design project we as graphic designers work on has a problem to solve and helping others solve the that problem is rewarding.

CREATING A BETTER VISUAL WORLD

Of all the above reasons this is by far the best reason for my love for graphic design and designing logos to be more specific. We as human beings are very visual species and it starts as children when reading illustration books. Even as adults when reading a novel we need the author to paint a picture in our minds by using words.

If you want to be a good graphic designer you must paint a picture as well, a digital picture that creates keywords in the viewers mind such as trust worthy, competitive, quality, helpfulness and dependable. I think the saying goes a picture paints a 1000 words or at least that’s how I’m going to word it for the sake of this post and discovering those words is always rewarding to me. Your visual masterpiece is going spread throughout business, throughout the world and you have the opportunity to create a visual pleasing experience for all, EXCITING!

PROS AND CONS

Like any profession there are pros and cons of being a graphic designer. I have already discuss most of the pros for me, being creative, getting mesmerized by the design process and most importantly not feeling like it work but rather it’s fun.

Now the cons but before I dive into the frustrating part of being a graphic designer I first want to say that my love for graphic design runs so deep that I even enjoy the cons. How crazy does that sound? Because I have a passions to create and design I am programmed to always find the bright side in the areas the frustrate me.

Clients who believe they are the graphic designer and they know whats best is definitely a cons for me. I never let a client instruct me in the design process and never let them take the lead. Now don’t get me wrong you need a clients input but you are the designer, they hired you for a reason and this is your opportunity to plant the idea in their mind that you know whats right for them and prove to them your design visually speaks there business without words.

The competition is many and sometimes you will be looked over by a far less qualified designer who frequents bad graphic design techniques because lets face it if you put several designs in the face of a client they will almost always pick the worst design. This is more commonly seen on the freelancer site such as freelancer.com, 99designs or Design Crowd but there are times you can make some money or build a network through these site so they do have their purpose. However, me personally I have seen the worst design win the contest or get the jobs to many times on these freelance design site and I have also had a client choose the worst logo design out of a couple of ideas I sketched.

THE PURPOSE

Well this is where my final words get spoken, if you made it this far I’m sure you understand why I love graphic design and why I have a passion for it. If you have asked yourself should I be a graphic designer I hope my expression of the love I have for graphic design has made you realize you want to be part of the amazing world of design. Designing is not just one of my skills, it part of my soul, a way to express myself and it is a way of life.

    Hi Salvatore-

Man it’s awesome to meet someone who has a tremendous passion for what they do… with your attitude you are destined to succeed with your business. Did you design all the images on your website? Also, is there a specific place we can go visit to view examples of your work? I have to admit… I use a lot of customizable templates to get my designs. With that said, do you find graphic designing a hard sale especially with all the do it yourself templates?

    Thanks!

Most of the images on the website are mine and some are place holders I will be replacing with my own designs. I am in the process of working on a new site with a business name instead of my personal name that will showcase my work which will be link on Logos and Simplicity.

No I don’t find graphic design to be a hard sale with all the templates out there because most high end clients and some small business want their company to stand out from the rest, be unique and that can be a little difficult when using templates that may be use by many.

It’s never too late to go back to school but now a days you can learn so much from the internet. Honestly I learned more on the internet and from books then I did in school. One of the best feeling is for someone to respect your passions and creativity, it makes it all worth it!

    Hey there
I’ve enjoyed reading your post since I had a website of my own and I had an ugly logo that someone had designed for me. So I set out to discover the world of graphic design and after some few errors here and there I made (in my eyes) a pretty great logo, the feeling I got when I was making it was great and finishing it just made me smile. I will have to search for you, maybe you could give me some tips here and there
