BRAND THE WORLD, HOW TO DO IT PROPERLY?

When it comes to starting a business, branding is one of the most important aspects from start to finish and bad branding is the downfall of many businesses but if done effectively it can help you be a step above the competition. Now you can across this page because you most likely want to learn how to create a brand but let’s first dive into what branding is…

So What Exactly Does Branding Mean?

Well simply put as all graphic designs or marketers with say it is the very promise you want to convey to your customer or the market! Branding must portray the What Do We Need?quality of your product, explain to your audience what they can expect from your services and what sets you aside from your competitors.

As a business you want your branding to showcase your experience and innovation within your specific market. You want your branding to express trust, high quality and value. Your branding must show that your are who your target audience is looking for and most importantly that you are what your target audience needs.

YOUR BRAND PLAN

It is important to devise a brand plan and discover how you are going to deliver your brand message. You need to figure out what your message is, who your message is going to be communicated too, where your Wheaties Cereal Champion Anthony Pettismessage will be showcased and when it will be delivered.

While branding you need to remember value brought to your product or services by effective branding is what leads to your audience or customers except a high price over the unbranded competition. In order to achieve this increase value over your competition you must portray quality to your audience, the same way General Mills using athletes to advertise their Wheaties brand cereal and if the cereal is good enough for a successful athlete then it is a quality product! There is a need for your brand to prove it’s product and service quality by visual cues such as athletes, business men or other successful figures who are already choosing to use your product.

How To Identify Your Brand?

This part of the process with be time consuming and at times down right frustrating. During this process there are a couple of things you will want to think about and figure out.

Your Business’ Mission

All company’s have a mission and yours or your client’s is no different so figure out just what you are setting out to accomplish? During this step you want to figure out what your company’s goals are, what you want your customers, employees and the surrounding world to think about your business.

Core Benefits of Your Product or Services

Fantastik Scrubbing BubblesHow will or how does your products or services fix your customers issues? Sit down and think long an hard on how your product or services will benefit your’s or your client’s customers. You want your brand to portray to your customers that it will somehow benefit them or correct an issue they are having it their life. Prove to them you are the fix and because of your product these problems will no longer exist. Let’s take Fantastik’s Scrubbing Bubbles where they depict a bubble with bristles in the commercial getting rid of those hard to remove stains and gunge that other products couldn’t. After watching the commercial most people are going to get it in their head that those are some really strong stain removing bubbles!

The Perception of Your Product

Research is important for all steps during the creation of your branding process and you want to figure out how your customers perceive your product. Is there are certain way your product already appears to the customer or the public and when you figure that out you will now be ready to move to the next step in “Identifying Your Brand” which is to determine the qualities you want associated with yours or your client’s business.

Final Steps & Thoughts

Now that you have identified your brand it’s time to put the plan in motion and get your message out to the masses. Your first step is to get an effective logo designed that expresses all your company’s qualities and services. Once you have designed a simple yet effective logo, your going to want to showcase it here, there and everywhere!

BEFORE DESIGNING A LOGO DON’T FORGET TO CHECK OUT MY OTHER POSTS, “WHY IS A LOGO IMPORTANT?“,”SIMPLICITY IN LOGO DESIGN“,”VECTOR VS. RASTER“,”OVERUSED AND ABUSED LOGO DESIGN“,”IS MY LOGO UNIQUE?“, AND”TOGETHER WE WILL IMPROVE OUR LOGO DESIGN!“. ALL OF THESE POST CAN HELP YOU AS A DESIGNER OR AS A BUSINESS OWNER DESIGN A SUCCESSFUL AND EFFECTIVE LOGO!

As I have been expressing through this post it is important to determine important messages your want to portray to the public about your brand but you must also remember brand trickles down to things you might not think is important such as the attire your or your employee wear, the way your greet people in person or on the phones, your letter head, packing material and even your email.

You want to also determine the personality of the brand such as friendly, or trust worthy, write a slogan that is memorable, timeless and express what your brand is a very few words.

Start thinking and designing your brand print material. Create a standard for your brand marketing print material by determining the color scheme, the most effect place for the logo and the over layout but remember keep it simple!

Last thing I want to discuss is to remember during the whole process you don’t want to make false accusations, promises your product or services can’t keep and design a brand for a product that won’t meet expectations. This will hurt your presents in the market, the way your customer perceives your product and will most likely tarnish your reputation as a company indefinitely!

GOOD LUCK WITH THE BRANDING, EVEN THOUGH IT CAN BE FRUSTRATING AT TIMES, IT CAN ALSO BE REWARDING AND A EXCITING JOURNEY! IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR FEEL I LEFT ANYTHING VITAL TO THE BRAND PROCESS OUT PLEASE DON’T HESITATE TO LEAVE A COMMENT DOWN BELOW.

First thank you for this post, my lights are on. Never really thought about the logo issue before, maybe that is what I am lacking. I agree I need to identify my brand. I think getting rid of the alarm clock is an awesome idea, maybe the logo is what I need!

    Thanks Randy

Even though I knew branding was important, I didn’t know how to get down to it. Thanks for explaining the process step by step!
I have a question, though. What if, after some time, you decide your logo is ineffective or you simply design a better one (or have someone design it for you)? How will changing your logo affect your business? When is it advisable to change the logo?
    Thanks again for great article!

Overtime your logo will need a redesign or freshening up! There are something you will need to take into consideration before you just dive into it and start making changes.

You want to first ask yourself how long has your business been around? How long has the logo been in play? Why are you thinking about a redesign? Why do you think your logo is no longer effective?

After you have found answers to the question above you then want to keep in my that changing too much, you want to make subtle tweaks or your could hurt your branding and logo could become unrecognizable! I would suggest getting some professional help when redesigning a logo because it can be a very delicate process and one mistake could ruin the way the public perceives your business or product.

As for your last question, “When is it advisable to change the logo?”, I am going to write a post explain when you would have a need to redesign your logo and things to stay away from during the process, so bookmark or follow one of the preferred social media to stay up-to-date.

    Great article!
I have a couple of businesses myself, all you say is absolutely positive! I only wish there was a secret formula to slap all those ingredients together. All you have mentioned is the crappies part of any business. Its the bit that will require most of your efforts and it will probably be the thing that will hunt you till the last day. Especially because not everybody thinks and feels the same you must always compromise for part of the “cake”, can’t target everybody!
    Thank You!

Unfortunately there is no secret formula that can be used for the different types of graphic design projects or elements of business that involve visual representation, only guidelines. Each business, Each individual and each project is different. When it comes to branding it is a sensitive and fragile process so I will always suggest seeking the help of a professional.

This post is to enlighten people of the process, give them some education to prepare for the branding process and to inform new graphic designers in their infancy!

Any business takes hard work to build and keep running but I think you would agree it’s all worth it in the end!
